Mission & History

"Through social ministry we will endeavor to integrate forgiveness for transgression with psycho-social and physical healing by meeting the profound social issues of our day with a liberating Gospel of restoration which affirms ethnic, political, social and individual diversity."

City of Refuge was founded in November 1991 by a group of 14 people committed to a ministry of restoration and reconciliation. We have grown very fast in the last 16 years and believe that this growth is God's purpose and that our ministry of restoration and reconciliation is one of great need to so many people in our world. We believe that for the child of God under grace every aspect of the law is now done away. Under grace we as believers have been delivered from the burden of a covenant of works, we are not now striving to be accepted, but rather are free to live as people who are accepted in Christ (Ephesians 1:6).

We welcome people who come from all aspects of society, especially those who have felt shut out, isolated and alone in their desire to be fully themselves and fully Christian. We have a saying here at City of Refuge and it is that we welcome you and all your baggage for we are here too with all our baggage - working toward a personal and intimate relationship with God. City of Refuge/UCC is an open and affirming congregation, open and affirming to all those who have lost, left, or never had a church home. We welcome you, your children, your spouses, your partners, your parents, and all your relations, and hope you can find a church family here.
